Down
to Earth Medicine for Seniors
The lifestyle habits we practice every day have a huge effect on our health in body, mind, and spirit. By incorporating four simple down-to-earth lifestyle essentials - exercising, drinking water, eating fiber, and eating vegetables - we can gently and naturally improve our health every single day.
Think of your body as a small pond. When a pond does not get fresh water in, or dirty water out, it becomes a swamp. In the same way, if we do not keep our bodies systems flowing, we become ill. You can monitor the health of your body by monitoring how efficiently your body removes waste products. How? The goal is simple - to have a bowel movement very day.
So, let's look at the 'fantastic four' suggestions:
EXERCISING:
Movement need not decrease with age. In fact, movement is an important key to physical and mental health. We need not be superstar athletes - in fact, a little exercise a day goes a long way. For example, a 15-minute walk after the evening meal will dramatically improve digestion and assimilation of nutrients, and fight constipation. In addition, walking with friends is an enjoyable social activity.
DRINKING WATER
Just like the earth itself, our bodies are 2/3 water. Drinking 6-8 glasses of water each day is the cheapest health insurance you can get. Water flushes toxins out of the bodies and promotes regular bowel function. Alcohol and caffeine based drinks (sodas and coffee) are dehydrating and should be avoided.
EATING FIBER
High fiber foods include whole grains like brown rice and whole grain breads. Fiber is important in the prevention of colon cancer and is essential to attain the goal of a bowel movement every day.
EATING VEGETABLES
Food is important medicine in the prevention of cancer and chronic disease, and many potent anti-cancer and anti-oxidant substances are found in simple vegetables. For example, a substance in tomatoes called lycopene has been shown to prevent prostate cancer, and substances in soybeans called isoflavones are important substances to prevent breast cancer.
By using these 'fantastic four' health guidelines every day in your life, you are improving your nutrition and elimination, and you are taking important steps to prevent serious illness before it happens. This down-to-earth approach - using diet and lifestyle changes to prevent disease - can have profound and positive effects on your health. Try it!
